  • I scratched my head when I realized the clutch plates are not in the most logical order, wondering why. Then I realized that the outer washer will spin at the same rate as the unsplined clutch plates, so there would be a disadvantage to having a steel washer rubbing on the outer thin washer. It still feels strange to have two steel washers stuck together, but they won't rub against each other since both are splined with the axle. Maybe it was some practical consideration like the cost of an additional clutch plate, or the total thickness would be too thin if only three steel washer were used. Or maybe the breakaway torque would be smoother if clutch contact is not identical. Anybody know?
