How to Replace a Clock Spring (airbag light & horn not working)
Learn how to turn off your airbag light and fix a horn that doesn't work by replacing your clock spring. Replacing a clock spring is very simple, saves us over $600 and takes less than an hour. I will show you how to safely remove the airbag and steering wheel so you can replace the clockspring at home using common hand tools.
To figure out I had a bad clock spring, I used an obd2 scanner to scan the airbag light and got codes b1801 and b1811 which is an open squib circuit, which means the clock spring is bad. Another way to tell the clock spring is bad is the horn doesn't work and/or the steering wheel buttons don't work.

How would I figure out if it’s the clock spring or just the horn?
Why is there no video for changing your airbag? Is ChrisFix against changing our own airbags? Thinking about buying a car for very cheap but the airbag has been blown. And thanx to Chris, I can fix everything else
Thanks alot for that Video man! Took us a long time to figure out why the horn and all the buttons on my grandmas steering wheel won't work. The Mechanic shop couldn't find the problem either. I'm gonna try this now and see if we get lucky:) Greets from Germany
Nice and elaborate procedures,very helpful,thanks...
have you learn the job of a car mechanik when yes how does it work in Usa in germany you go to school for it for 3.5 years and in a Garage were you learn the practic
warning in germany and many outer countries is it illegal do it you self why you need a Lizenz for working on the Airbag so pleas do it in the garage were no one can see it
LMAO.. Never knew that part was called a clock spring. When the video started I was like "yea right, more piston return springs".. LOL.. Good video. Keep it up.
I like your Phone Background
Not all Clock springs are made the same

nice job, best car repair videos on youtube!
My horn wasn't working and I had an airbag light and it turned out to be both the clockspring and the horn. Also you can pull the codes by jumping the obd2 plug and getting it to cycle through the codes by flashing the ABS light... each car has a different way of doing this.
Answerrr meeee Chris
Pooping on the floor Chris fix Pooping on the back of your car 🚙
Pooping on the floor
Thanks!
I always
is that a horn cable or a ground cable???
I'd like to recommend you that it'd be better and safer to pull the orange safety tab from the clock spring after you reinstall the steering wheel, so it wouldn't be a headache to line it straight
15:10 the combination of threadlocker (or anti-seize) with a torque wrench is a bad idea; because both provide some initial lubricant, you end up with a higher compression than what the same torque would have applied to dry parts
Why you mark there while most cars are marked there already for you? Your clock spring no need of re- centred?
excellent very detailed easy to understand video. safety hints & tips esp. let the caps drain, appreciated. subscribed!
7:39 Is it okay if my airbag inflator is a little more rusty than yours? It doesn't seem to be part of any current recalls.
thanks for video very well
It worked!!! Thanks man truly a blessing to have your help! Have a great 2021.
Hey Chris thanks for the info, this video was very helpfull, I AM from Ecuador, Do You know if this obd tool works for a Skoda Fabia?
You are so knowledgeable. I wish you were my mechanic! I could learn from you all day!
Love you videos, so much details.
@ChrisFix I have a 2015 Prius and my horn keeps going off at random times. Would you recommend replacing the clock spring? My airbag light isn’t on. Everything else is working fine. The horn is just randomly honking really loud.
Would the clock spring also be the reason for a horn that is stuck in the on position?
I have 2003 toyota sequoia limited, clock spring was bad, I replaced it. Airbag light gone.. but horn still not working.
Hello, My 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 was involved in an accident. Airbag got deployed . I have changed the airbag and front seat belts. But, still have the airbag light on ! Do you know what else do I need to change? please let me know if I could use your help with this problem. Thanks a lot in advance
what a wonderful video you saved me from detailers scam. thank you chris
Memories that Chrisfix cut out the old leather and recovered the whole steering wheel the leather or the edge is all crack and faded and use the steering wheel puller and now Chrisfix has access to the clock spring 10:00
You're a legend Chris !
Chris is the best mechanic on LTworlds
I’m happy that they designed the steering wheel so @chrisfix doesn’t used steering wheel puller
Sorry if it's been asked before, but do you remember if the old clockspring was OEM or aftermarket? Thanks.
Man, I have an isue with the yellow conector from the car to the clock spring, cannot fit it to the top
Xcellent job, thanks, you helped me a lot
Does this also work for the passengers side light
@ChrisFix I'm still stuck that someone with 7 mill subs commented back with an answer I'm a new subscriber but illl be here a while
no
Our van doesn't have a clock spring, it just has a metal plate and some wires also if you turn the steering wheel to lock the horn does not work.
I just turn right when I have to honk
I have an airbag light on, but my steering wheel has some play in it. So if my wheels are straight but my steering wheel isn’t (or vice versa) would I still be able to replace the clock spring?
my audio controls on my steering wheel dont work, possibly the clock spring? could affect it?
I watched a few Toyota clock spring replacement videos before this, but only after watching your video did it seem so much simpler than the others. Never thought I’d need to do this myself but thanks for the helpful video ChrisFix!
I lucky because I got a 07 Prius and it needs a clock spring replaced
Tq for your video..i have same problem with my car...horn not working...Proton Wira..
Hey Chris can you make more videos on Toyota prius’s? I own a 2nd gen Prius and would like to know more about them.
Thanks for the video idea!
How can I trust that is it working? Show us!
Is the 20$ clock spring safe??? I need to change mine one my 2005 Toyota Mattrix, but wtf is that price range, from 300$ to 20$ ??!! I asked my dealership and he said he would not trust the 20$ China one... is it like a big Toyota scam or is it really dangerous, cheap security 20$ part that will make my airbag explode in my face at any moment??
10:00 Only veteran viewers will know that clip is old
Nice to see youchris
Ughhhh I’m so scareddddd 😂
What brand is the obd2 reader?
Thanks can’t wait to order mine

GOOD!
Thanks!
All the dislikes are from the mechanics and dealers
I actually watched all of your videos a while ago and when my horn stopped working and heard a lot of snapping of wires when turning the steering wheel I new exactly what it was. Thanks for what you do.
Great thank u
rip my nissan tiida horn
ft-lbs?! That definitely said in-lbs. Where did you see ft-lbs? Also, my Nissan has an airbag light on, and the horn no longer beeps when we lock it from outside with the key fob. Could that be an indication of a failing clock spring?
You saved my life!
Would this cause my turn signals to turn on only sometimes? They work when I turn the hazards on
Really superb bro...I'm a first timer and I've learned a lot..thanks👍
I'm glad you learned a lot from the video! Thanks a lot!
Why broken clock spring
Why broken
The clock spring is called abs
very good video, would that work with a 2009 nissan sentra? I have watched many videos before but never detailed like yours. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks a lot! I've done this on a bunch of different cars and this wouldn't be much different than your Nissan!
Chris, bro you are my auto mechanic hero !!
Thanks a lot!
Is the after market clock spring universal?
@ChrisFix will it fit on miata mx5 2017? I tried putting a quick release and I didn’t know you’re not supposed to spin the clock spring :(
They might the same one on a lot of cars but you'll have check fitment!
Chrisfix: hey guys, chrisfix here. Problems with your airbag? First thing you need to do is to disconnect the battery Me: disconnects the battery but pulls airbag and brings it In house and airbag deploys and house destroys because of airbag.
How many times he said NUT👉🏽
Chris your wallpaper is awesome I give it a 10 out of 10
that one is my fav car me in 2013 i got that car
No one: Chris’s Neighbours: “Well, he’s talking to his car again.”
Hey Chris I’ve recently had my air bag, dash and console out and I’ve got an airbag light on the dash now does this need a reset code doing or is this something else ?
Dealership told me this will take 1.5 hours hence the 1.5 hour labor charge....is that true? Because the video is not that long?
Could you tell me the name of the app you use to scan the car please
Going to try on 2012 Prius. Hope it’s easy. Just scared about air bag blowing up in my face
I did the same thing twice on my 01 tundra and it didn’t work, I know I’m doing something wrong but I don’t know what it is, the wheels are straight, the spring clock is center, I checked all fuses, the horn doesn’t work, I watched videos of 01 tundras. I just give up.
Thanks a lot ChrisFix!! Super-useful video!! Got 2 notes for ppl reading this. 1. I needed a puller set to remove the steering wheel in my 2008 Gen2 Prius (Europe). 2. For those using metric units, be careful not to confuse in-lbs and ft-lbs in the video. Ensure to set the torque wrench properly! I used too much force putting back in the two torx screws at the sides. When I tried to take them away again, I stripped them. I succeeded in removing them afterwards, but it was kind of a nightmare.. @ChrisFix, as I used a puller to take it out, would I need to do something to 'block' the steering wheel in when putting it back?
@ChrisFix Confirmed!
Thanks a lot! You should be able to just put the steering wheel back on!
How do you know how many pounds I’ve torqued down? Is one click one pound?
Trim removal tools made out of polyurethane are so cheap, using a screwdriver does not make sense. I paid £5 for a very nice set online. :)
More talking no working
Thanks for sharing!
600$ just like that ?!! Wow Chris you are a good persen
Chrisfix is a life saver.
Worked best

Hey I have the airbag light on. Blue driver installed into port and paired. Not reading airbag code. Any fix? Least to get a code out of blue driver.
If you buy an after-market clock spring, is there any way to test if it's good before installing it? I'm planning to buy one for my SEAT Alhambra and get our local mechanic to fit it, but I don't want to incur paying for his labour only to find out the clock spring I've bought is no good.
Do these clock springs already come centered from the manufacturer?? Or do I have to find center manually???? Thanks!!
@ChrisFix 👍
They should come centered, but I would double check and see if there is a centering procedure for your specific make and model!
if i made a car its going to have more than 1 battery multiple batteries for everything so when u fix the airbag the old one just randomly goes off lol
Can u say hi to me?
I love your video chirs what car shot I buy if I was to get one
Urock!
Thanks!
Just make certain it is not anything else, I almost bought a clock spring bought it was just a few freak things wrong that all could be diagnosed by a faulty clock spring 😂 I bought a car whose horn wire was broke, and airbag light was on, which turned off the cruise control, because the horn, and cruiser control didn't work along with the airbag light. Went under my dash to patch in a temporary button for the horn and found the cut wire, along with I found out that the airbag and cruise control was because the passenger occupancy sensor was unplugged
Much better then buying a $350 clock spring from the Ford dealership, or trusting one to work from Ebay, just to find out that it wasn't the problem
Clock Sprigs are smart but break time to time
Thanks good information 👍👍👍👌👌👌🇮🇳🇮🇳
