Why it's IMPORTANT to use the Correct Air in Your Tires (Summer & Winter Air)!

1 Bal 2019

I show why is it important to not only fill your tires up to the correct pressure but also use the CORRECT AIR! Learn how to replace winter air, with summer air!
Most people know when filling your car or truck tries that you need to fill it to the correct air pressure. What people dont know, is the air that goes into the tires is just as important. Winter air is cold, dry, and dense, therefore heavy while summer air is warm, humid, and light. Running winter air in the summer will cause lower tire pressure and decreased fuel economy (mpg). Running summer tire in the winter, will cause loss of traction and over inflated tires which could lead to a blow out!

  • 5:54 But but, if the tires are rated at "30 PSI COLD" for cold heavy winter air shouldn't you inflate to a higher psi with the lighter rarefied summer air? After all the PV=nRT ideal gas law equation shows us that P (Pressure) is directly proportional to n (the number of moles of gas) and thus if you have a denser gas with cold air and thus more moles per unit volume you would have more pressure if you put in the more widely spaced hot air? Maybe you need a part two for this in the next month or so and a chemical engineer to more deeply explain the math and thermophysical properties behind this annual phenomenon. But makes sense after I've read a few sites saying to check the tire pressure after extreme weather changes. Would this be cheaper than the nitrogen gas tire fill? Thanks

Anyone who goes to the counter and asks for "summer air" vs "winter air" compressed air cans, im sure its going to make their day and give you a nice giggle... along with some confused looks.

  • When I first moved to Pittsburgh my tires were filled with Summer Air from Florida. Came out one day to the cold day, the first snow, it was beautiful! Jumped in the car, and my Summer Air ran flat in the tires! Tire Pressure Monitor was on for all four corners of the car. All four tires were down to 20 PSI. Summer Air, since it isn't as dense, winds up not being resilient to cold. I was able to drive slowly to a gas station that fortunately was in the north, and filled up my tires with the proper dense Winter Air. Oh and the windshield wiper fluid also froze. They don't sell the -20 degree fluid in Florida.

  • So I have essentially no car maintenance experience, but I did take four years of chemistry in college, and around the point Engineering Explained said that based on his 75 years of experience that Summer air was an ideal gas but Winter air wasn't, I was like, "would that make any difference in compressibility?" Whenever someone is encouraging me to go to a mechanic or auto supply store and ask for something I've never heard of before, I am suspicious lol. Kind of incredible the amount of time you must have put into those labels.
